The naked truth!  It was clearly transparent that he had a vested interest!

<SNICKER>

Me: So, Brother, you read the book. How soon do you think a Brother should read it?
Brother: Oh, not until they are at least a Fellow Craft?
Me: Why so?
Brother: Well, you don't want to overwhelm an Apprentice with this kind of Light.
Me: Why not?
Brother: Well, they need to finish working on subduing their Passions and Circumscribing their desires and all first.
Me: <cough> You do realize what you are saying here?
Brother: What's that?
Me: That cuts out about 99.9% of the existing Craft.

-------------- COACH'S CHALLENGE --------------

The Candidates are restless once more. It seems that they are displeased with what is being demanded of them to progress. The requirements to memorize and give back are simply not enough in their eyes. One of them said he was not provided any further training in the use of the 24 inch gauge. Another complained that the common gavel instruction was near non-existent. One after another complained that all the important things pointed toward by the first degree ritual are not required by the Lodge to be done by the candidates to progress. You agree with them and decide to provide them the necessary hoops as prescribed by ritual to jump through. You run all this by the lodge officers and they unanimously support your decision and task you with the following:
YOUR TASKS:
1) Identify at least 10 things/area that the Apprentice Ritual directs candidates to Perfect to make themselves better men.
2) Write up a brief summery of each of the tasks, clearly stating the end in mind for each and what is required to achieve it.
3) Produce a viable and repeatable curriculum around these 10 things/areas, structuring tasks that will cultivate improvement with the candidates when done fully.
You accept the tasks, role up your sleeves and begin.
What do you come up with?

-------------- MYTH --------------

"The first stage of the mythological journey––which we have designated the "call to adventure"––signifies that destiny has summoned the hero and transferred his spiritual center of gravity from within the pale of society to a zone unknown. This fateful region of both treasure and danger may be variously represented: as a distant land, a forest, a kingdom underground, beneath the waves or above the sky, a secret island, a lofty mountaintop, or profound dream state; but it is always a place of strangely fluid and polymorphous beings, unimaginable torments, superhuman deeds, and impossible delights."
Joseph Campbell, "The Hero with a Thousand Faces" (Third edition with revisions copyright © 2008 Joseph Campbell Foundation; Second edition with revisions copyright © 1968 Princeton University Press; original edition copyright © 1949 Bollingen Foundation), p.48
