PROBLEM FOUND!
Without a foundation in
classical
literature, scripture and related materials,
there is little likelihood
of any man
truly appreciating anything
other than the superficial
aspects
of what the Society offers him.
What’s more,
when they don’t
appreciate what is offered,
they do not stick around much longer
than is
absolutely necessary.

"Idolatry
consists in confusing the symbol with the thing signified, the
substitution of a material for a mental object of worship, after a
higher spiritualism has become possible; an ill-judged preference of the
inferior to the superior symbol, an inadequate & sensual conception
of the Deity: & every religion & every conception of God is
idolatrous, in so far as it is imperfect, & as it substitutes a
feeble & temporary idea in the shrine of that Undiscoverable Being
who can be known only in part, & who can therefore be honored, even
by the most enlightened among His worshippers, only in proportion to
their limited powers of understanding & imagining to themselves His
perfections."

-------------- WINNING REFLECTIONS --------------
As
much as I enjoyed playing chess as a child,
I lost all interest in it
once I realized the goal was
to win at the expense of another.
That
insight allowed me to take focus off
playing for that purpose in that
game and others as well.
Winning was redefined as gaining "improvement"
and, since that moment, I sought games
where all could win
and do so in
increasing amounts,
should all cooperate.

Hello Coach Nagy,
ReplyDeleteFirst let me say how grateful I am for all the postings and education you provide... They really provide some thought-provoking and study worthy thoughts. Thanks so much. But there was one bit that gave me pause on this posting... It was the cartoon where two people were looking at a single number painted on the ground and debating if it was a six or a nine. I believe that I understand the purpose was to help draw thoughts about the confusion or difference between Freemasonry and Masonry, (Which I agree two different things). But the cartoon seem to be two people debating that one single object had two different meanings... Which immediately made me think of the term "relativism". This raised a immediate red flag for me. To my mind, a cartoon where people were looking at two separate items, and calling both items one thing would be an example of the difference between Freemasonry and Masonry. Color me curious and slightly confused. :)
The meme you refer to is self contained. It's spring boarding off of two concepts.
ReplyDelete1) The presupposition of infinite interpretations assuming all interpretations are valid. This is obvious negated buy "2"; there are finite optimal interpretations.
2) The challenge-problem-trouble chain that I've posted about many times before. Knowing the differences between each allows for 3-4-5 in the meme; which support the statements 1 & 2.
Yes, you can apply all this to the differences between freemasonry and masonry, but that was not the focus of the meme.
