He thanks you for your interest and refers to scripture:

And backs this with:
"Then the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living soul." Genesis 2:7
Further tempering these with:
"Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." 1 Thessalonians 5:23
Adding, "I'd like to know your best thoughts on their differences and would like you to focus upon what distinguishes one from the other."
Fully realizing that the two words are often used synonymous, you avoid this direction and issue IN TOTAL and endeavor to share your best thoughts on his actual question and not what you might share that would in any way dismiss his question.
What insights about his interest do you share with him, fully honoring his request without forcing him toward what you would do, and actually answering his question?
